Understanding Your Australian Pay: Revised Stage 3 Tax Cuts & Take-Home Pay

From 1 July 2024, the Australian Government implemented revised Stage 3 income tax cuts designed to deliver tax relief to all 13.6 million Australian taxpayers. Our calculator uses the official Australian Taxation Office (ATO) marginal tax scales, statutory Medicare levy rates (2%), and scheduled Superannuation Guarantee contribution percentages to give you an exact breakdown of your take-home earnings.

Superannuation Guarantee (SG) Increases

By Australian federal law, employers must pay mandatory superannuation on top of ordinary time earnings. The legislative timetable establishes the following contribution minimums:

  • 1 July 2024 – 30 June 2025: 11.5%
  • 1 July 2025 onwards: 12.0%

Ensure you know whether your job offer is expressed as "Base Salary Plus Super" or a "Total Remuneration Package (Inclusive of Super)", as SG increases directly affect take-home pay under total package contracts.

HECS / HELP Higher Education Debt

If you have a student debt under HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, VET Student Loans, or Australian Apprenticeship Support Loans, repayments are automatically withheld by your employer through PAYG once your repayment income crosses the minimum threshold.

2024–2025 Minimum Threshold: $54,435 (repayment rate 1.0%)
Maximum Repayment Tier: $159,664+ (repayment rate 10.0%)

Repayment income consists of taxable income, reportable fringe benefits, total net investment losses, and reportable employer super contributions.

Frequently Asked Questions: Australian Pay & Tax

What is the Australian tax-free threshold and should I claim it?↓

If you are an Australian resident for tax purposes, the first $18,200 of your annual income is completely tax-free. When completing your Tax File Number (TFN) declaration form with an employer, you should generally claim the tax-free threshold from your primary (highest-paying) employer. If you work a second job, do not claim the threshold on the second job to avoid a tax debt at the end of the financial year.

Who qualifies for a Medicare Levy exemption?↓

Most Australian residents pay a 2% Medicare levy. However, you may be eligible for a full or partial exemption if: (1) you have specific medical conditions (e.g. blindness or receiving a sickness allowance), (2) you are a foreign resident or not entitled to Medicare benefits (e.g. certain visa holders with a Medicare Entitlement Statement), or (3) your taxable income is below the ATO low-income threshold ($26,000 for singles in 2023–24).

How does salary sacrifice affect my taxable income and super?↓

Salary sacrificing into superannuation involves directing pre-tax income into your super fund. These concessional contributions are taxed at only 15% inside the super fund instead of your marginal tax rate (which can be up to 45% + Medicare), lowering your overall taxable income and boosting long-term retirement savings, subject to the annual concessional cap ($30,000 for 2024–2025).
